How the Lorax Stunned the Box OfficeMarch 8, 2012
The Lorax took film industry analysts by surprise by taking in over $70 Million at the box office in its opening weekend, far beyond expert predictions. Compare that to Spielberg’s Tintin, which opened to $9.7 Million last December.
How did Universal pull it off? Joshua Weinstein from Reuters breaks it down in this article. Some sample observations:
- The timing was right, due to a lack of recent family films.
- Brilliant marketing, with 70 promotional partners (although Stephen Colbert had a different take on that).
- The orange-and-yellow-themed marketing campaign was appealingly bright and spring-like at a time when people are tired of winter.
- They capitalized on “from the producers of Despicable Me.”
The Lorax is expected to have a strong weekend, likely to surpass John Carter, which opens tomorrow.
I would very much like to purchase a few Thneeds, and I’m confident that their production can be supported by any economy/ecology capable of supporting the producer of THE LORAX. Trees, after all, are not the only things that humans care about. Please direct me to a Thneed manufacturer, and/or to a source of patterns for knitting or crocheting a Thneed of my very own.
